CUSTOMER LIFECYCLE
AUDIENCE & CONSENT
Who can — and should — we communicate with?
Your database is not your audience.
Having an email address doesn't necessarily mean someone should receive marketing.
Over time, ecommerce databases accumulate:
- customers and subscribers
- never-subscribed profiles
- imported contacts
- incomplete or ambiguous consent
- duplicate and overlapping audiences
- inactive and unengaged profiles
- marketplace, relay and role-based addresses
The result can be a database that's considerably larger than the audience you can — or should — actually market to.
More profiles don't automatically mean more opportunity.
Better governance. Better decisions.
Audience governance establishes clear rules around who should receive what, when and why.
That means understanding how profiles enter your database, how consent is captured, how audiences are defined and which profiles should be included, restricted or suppressed.
Done properly, this can help:
- protect deliverability
- reduce unnecessary profile costs
- improve campaign targeting
- create more meaningful segments
- reduce compliance risk
- provide cleaner data for lifecycle automation
The objective isn't simply a smaller database. It's a better governed one.
Consent starts before the email is sent.
Consent isn't just an unsubscribe link at the bottom of an email.
It begins with how the customer entered your database in the first place.
Signup forms, checkout, account creation, integrations, imports and third-party systems can all create or update customer profiles — often in different ways.
I look at the complete journey:
Profile creation → Consent → Audience eligibility → Communication → Engagement
This makes it possible to distinguish between having customer data and having a legitimate reason to use that data for marketing.
From lists to useful audiences.
Lists are useful for collecting and organising profiles.
But effective lifecycle marketing requires more than sending campaigns to increasingly large lists.
The real opportunity comes from understanding differences between customers — their consent, behaviour, purchase history, engagement and value — and using those differences to determine how they should be treated.
The right message matters. But so does sending it to the right person.
How I can help
I can review how your current audience is being created, governed and used, including:
- profile creation and source
- signup and checkout consent
- lists and segments
- subscriber status
- suppression and exclusion rules
- engagement criteria
- audience overlap
- deliverability risk
- profile and platform costs
Where appropriate, I'll then recommend practical changes to simplify the structure and establish clearer rules for ongoing audience management.
Better governed audiences create stronger foundations for everything that follows.
