FAQ: How do you change account ownership?
There are two typical scenarios where you might need to transfer ownership of a Klaviyo account:
- You’ve purchased an ecommerce store which had an existing Klaviyo account and wish to gain access as the new owner
- You’re a consultant or agency who has just completed the set up of a Klaviyo account on behalf of a store owner and now wish to hand over ownership of the Klaviyo account to the store owner
This used to be a relatively simple process…
First of all, the current owner goes to the account name in the top right of admin and clicks on ‘Account’ in the drop down menu.
From the Account page, simply select ‘Users’ from the ‘Settings’ drop down menu. This brings up the list of all users.
Clicking on any user opens the ‘User Details’ dialogue box (see below). In the drop down under ‘User Role’, all you had to do was change the role ‘Owner’ and hit the blue ‘Update’ button.

Simple right? Not any more…
Removal of the Update button
Around the middle of 2019, this appeared to change. After selecting ‘Owner’ from the drop down list of roles, the blue ‘Update’ button would disappear…

The Klaviyo support team logged this as an issue to resolve. But at the KLAVIYO:BOS 2019 conference, the support team confirmed that this was not a ‘bug’. It seems like this is a deliberate change, as part of a broader initiative to tighten security.
If you wish to transfer ownership of a Klaviyo account, the current (or previous) owner must now contact the Klaviyo support team (success@klaviyo.com) and request a transfer.
This makes the current Klaviyo help document on transferring account ownership out of date.
